Mohini Hewa was born and raised in France, and grew up surrounded by different cultures, but predominantly, Algerian and Egyptian cultures, thanks to her mother. At a young age, she had a lot of questions about where her family was from, and about where her father was family was from. She wanted to know the answers to those questions because she read everywhere that to know oneself, you had to know your roots. Visual arts gave her more than what she had asked for.
The basic purpose behind her art is to learn more about her backgrounds, to understand herself better and connect with people in a similar situation. Through an anthropological and socio-cultural approach, she recreates pieces of the puzzle that she is, in order to, perhaps one day, answer her number one question, “Who am I?”
